No amount of alcohol is safe to drink during pregnancy. For FASD Awareness Month in September, we’ve put together some recipes. Read our myths and facts, then fix yourself a non-alcoholic drink! Scroll down for recipes.
Myth: It’s safe to have an occasional glass of wine during pregnancy.
Fact: The American Academy of Pediatrics(AAP) says no amount of alcohol is safe during any trimester of pregnancy.
Myth: Drinking beer increases milk production in nursing moms.
Fact: Alcohol does not increase milk supply. AAP recommends avoiding alcohol while breastfeeding as it is passed through breastmilk. If alcohol is consumed, you should wait two hours before breastfeeding.
Myth: If a woman admits she has a drinking problem during pregnancy, her health care provider will report her to children and youth services.
Fact: “Asking for help is a strength,” says Barbara Werner of Community Prevention Partnership. “Your health care information is protected and not shared with children and youth services. The only reason a report can be made is if abuse or neglect is suspected. Getting help is a positive.” The sooner a pregnant woman stops drinking, the better it will be for her baby and herself.
