DDAP TRAINING: Motivational Interviewing – Advancing the Practice Spring 2024

This is a two-day DDAP (PA Dept of Drug & Alcohol Programs) training that takes place in person at the RISE Center on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 16 & 17, 2024, from 9 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

This 2-day training is an experiential and didactic skill-building session designed to assist those working with individuals who are ambivalent about participating in treatment and increase the skills necessary to actively engage them in a recovery process. Participants will also gain an understanding of how MI relates to applying the ASAM Criteria’s principles in their ongoing client assessments.

About the Trainers

Bernard Showers, LCSW, CAADC is a 2010 graduate of Shippensburg University’s MSW Program. He has been practicing as a Social Worker since 2012 with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in Baltimore, MD, working in a number of different roles within his specialty of substance use disorders. In addition to his clinical roles, Bernard is a national consultant for the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Evidence-Based Psychotherapy Initiatives in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Substance Use Disorders, Motivational Interviewing, and Motivational Enhancement Therapy. He is a certified VA provider for Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Depression, having received his training from the Beck Institute in Philadelphia, PA. As a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, Bernard has provided a number of local, regional, and national trainings.

Martha Thompson, Psy. D. has been providing direct clinical care in mental health and addictions since 1999. She is the Owner of Empower the Mind LLC, a training and consulting business for mental health and addiction professionals. Her passion for helping others grow drives her personally and professionally. Dr. Thompson has an open and engaging style, and her energy and joy in sharing her expertise is always present, whether she is working with clients or leading an educational session. She applies best practice approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness interventions, to help her clients make the changes necessary for an improved life.
