Berks County SAP Professional Development Day 2024

The SAP Professional Development Day will once again be all in-person at the Berks County Intermediate Unit on Monday August 12, 2024, 8:00 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.

Caron Treatment Centers and the Council on Chemical Abuse invite you to save the date (8/12/2024) for a full day of training focusing on the topics related to K-12 SAP teams. This event will be held in-person at the Berks County Intermediate Unit (BCIU). Lunch will be provided. We will also recognize schools, teams, and individuals during the Berks’ SAP Awards Presentation. This event is offered at no cost, thanks to the Berks County Intermediate Unit, Caron Treatment Centers, and Council on Chemical Abuse.

 

“Chocolate & Poverty” presented by Stacey Spangenburg

Utilizing poverty statistics and the research of people like Dr. Eric Jensen, Dr. Ruby Payne, Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, and Dr. Paul Gorski, this workshop addresses the characteristics and traits of students/families in poverty. Topics include: the behavior patterns of many in poverty, assessing resources available to families, and how economic realities affect daily living. The workshop will include video clips, group discussion with exercises, and lecture. Participants will receive a link to educational resources including the training outline and a listing of recommended books, articles, and websites.

 

“Connect with COMCHI” presented by Bo Shappell & Daniella Land

Looking to cultivate authentic connections?  Are your students’ facing challenges in building meaningful relationships and engaging in dialogue?  Discover innovative strategies to elevate relationship building and foster insight with COMCHI. During this hands-on and engaging workshop, we will explore how a fun, multifaceted, and interactive card game of questions, reflections, and metaphors can foster self-awareness and strengthen connections with your students. Additionally, explore innovative blocks that transform abstract ideas such as emotions, core values, and essential skills, into tangible, hands-on learning experiences. Participants will leave with a range of activities and strategies that they can readily implement with students. Plus, they will have fun and make new connections along the way!

“ACT: Your Actions Create Your Tomorrow” presented by Cliff Crosby

Clifton “Cliff” Crosby, the charismatic, inspirational, former NFL Player and Super Bowl Champion, has a fascinating behind the- scenes story of how hard choices and hard work helped him overcome difficult family circumstances. Cliff’s presentation will include motivational
messaging on the following four points:
• Set goals and act on them
• Be where you’re supposed to be
• Get involved
• Recognize when you need help and ask for it

“THRIVE Mini Session” presented by Kelsey Scaffidi & Karis Robinson

Well-being, as defined by Merriam-Webster, the World Health Organization, and the American Psychological Association, is the state of being happy, content, and healthy. Well-being is associated with our quality of life and ability to contribute to the world with a sense of meaning and purpose. It requires overall good physical and mental health and an optimistic outlook. As youth

-serving professionals, you may experience elevated levels of stress, challenging your well-being. THRIVE helps participants address their well-being through techniques such as mindfulness, stress management, and resiliency-building strategies.

THRIVE goals include:

• Increase awareness of the barriers that interfere with well-being
• Introduce strategies to support overall health and well-being
• Strengthen connections with participants’ support systems
• Reinforce self-care as a priority.


“Marijuana Deep Dive” presented by Mallory Henry

This presentation will provide participants with an in depth understanding of Cannabis and adolescent use, including current trends and looking at Pennsylvania Youth Survey data. Participants will gain a broader knowledge of Cannabis, Marijuana and Hemp and what the physical, emotional and psychological consequences can be for adolescents who use cannabis. Participants will also leave with tangible resources on how to reframe prevention within their school and community and provide resources for students who already use cannabis.
